What causes the difference in size between the Program and Auto mode photos?

I have a Canon 450D and was surprised to find that the Program mode photo is about 3 - 4 times as jumbo as the Auto mode photo. 4 mb, vs 1 mb.The settings are the same, and the dimensions are the same. So where do the extra megabytes come from?

I also have the 450D and can acknowledge you that I find it hard to believe that any 12MP jpeg image that you take (at the highest quality of Large/Fine) could ever be as low as only 1MB in size.

All of my images (whack in Large/Fine jpeg) vary in sizes from about 2.8MB to almost 6MB in size, with the average around 4 to 4.5MB in take the measure of. I almost always shoot in Aperture Priority (Av) or Manual (M) mode.

These variations in file sizes is all to do with how much information (or details) there are in each figure of speech.

But...1MB??? I just don't get it.
